Mandalas
Learning Goals:
Students created a pattern using at least 3 variables in a random or predictable way. Students were also exposed to symmetry and the art & history of mandalas.
They used markers and paper-folding to create their artwork.
This is one of my favorite lessons, simply because it's fun and EVERY kid enjoys it EVERY time. All you need to do is fold a coffee filter in half three times, and whatever you draw on the front of your wedge, you have to draw on the back as well with marker! It's really important to explain to the kids that they need to draw slowly so the marker soaks through. Also, that they should not open it until they are completely finished with their designs because it's hard to line everything up again with the folding. I used this lesson to explore pattern and the history of mandalas.
